When Mark Mulcahy's wife Melissa died unexpectedly, leaving him to raise their three year old twins on his own, fellow musicians felt compelled to help him raise money so he could continue making music. Before the
Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy came out last year, a tribute which included appearances by The National and Dinosaur Jr., a 7 inch with Thom Yorke's cover of "All For The Best" and Mulcahy's "Ciao My Shining Star," was released, the proceeds going to Mark's family. The former Miracle Legion and Polaris frontman has been writing and singing music since the mid 80s, now pursuing a solo career. "Ciao, My Shining Star" is particularly poignant given the circumstances, the 80s dream pop and melodic inflection in his voice really help as well. It's a forgotten gem from last year and reminder of Mulcahy's aptitude as a musician, even after all these years.
