Fever Ray (Familjen Remix), Major Lazer (Thom Yorke Remix)

Karin Dreijer Andersson has always been a very active musician. Since 2009 she has been involved in two collaborations with Royksopp; she's composed the score for the opera "Tomorrow, In A Year" based on Charles Darwin's "Origin Of Species" with her brother Olof Dreijer, under their esteemed moniker "The Knife;" she's come out with her first solo album as Fever Ray and even released a live version of the album as well. Her lead single off the Fever Ray LP "If I had A Heart," like the rest of the album, experimented heavily in deep frightening vocals, and slower paced electronica. It sounds nothing like the Knife, no crowd pleasing club jammers like "Silent Shout," "We Share our Mother's Health," or "Like A Pen." DJ Familjen's remix of "If I Had A Heart" brings a serious groove to the song. It adds a missing essential ingredient: bass, while still keeping the integrity of the original. The beat orchestrated by Familjen is pure, unadulterated hip hop particularly due to the loveliest use of snares and kick drums. It syncs quite well with Karin's spacey far-out vocals making this remix superior to the original.

This is why Thom Yorke is the most diverse person in the music industry. He has an ear for everything; from British rock to experimental rock; from electronic infused alternative to dubstep. He has recently been on an electronic binge; singing on Modeselektor's "The White Flash," and on Flying Lotus's "And The World Laughs With You." In addition to being a vocalist, musician, and political activist, he also does a swell job remixing and editing songs. Reggae/ dubstep DJs Diplo and Switch recent outfit "Major Lazer" are notorious for 2009's "Guns Don't Kill People...Lazers Do" which included collaborations with M.I.A., Spank Rock, Santigold and Amanda Blank. This year they collaborated with La Roux on the "Lazer Proof" record and have released the "Lazers Never Die" EP which features Yorke remixing "Jump Up." This is the first reggae/Radiohead collaborative since Easy Stars All Stars did "Radiodread." It would be nice to hear Thom throw down a few verses on the track, but he remains the silent producer on this one. The remix lives up to its expectations: imagine Leftside & Supahype throwing it down on "Idioteque." Hard to believe, eh?
