I had a small conundrum to solve when I realized Local Natives and Ruby Suns were playing the same night Deerhunter and Real Estate were. Shortly into their set though, I was relieved to discover I assuredly made the right choice. Bradford Cox is simply a musical genius; seeing Deerhunter live, you could really hear the Atlas Sound elements: the spaciness and distortion, the layers of melodies in the background, the way they transitioned from every song to the next, leaving the audience rarely a moment of dead air. They played all the favourites from Halcyon Digest, including "Revival," "Don't Cry," "Memory Boy," my personal fave "Helicopter" and closed with their tribute to Jay Reatard, "He Would Have Laughed,"which had to be the best moment of the concert experience. Live, it sounds even more majestic, a song as climactic and poignant as Grizzly Bear's "While You Wait For The Others." The skinny, awkward Bradford joked with us, and shared his love of Toronto, particularly of Pizza Pizza. Thanks Bradford. Check out live footage from the show below!
