CANADIAN MUSIC WEEK 2011

The whirlwind that is CMW is coming.

Canadian Music Week is set to kick off on March 9th and we're here to give you our "best bet" picks for bands to see during the 5 day musical orgy that is to descend upon Toronto. No, seriously, 800 artists at 55 great Torontonian venues qualifies as an orgy. So, here you go, a couple picks for the first night of a truly epic week of music:

East side: Mother Mother

The Phoenix Concert Theatre plays host to the BC five-piece band Mother Mother and opening acts Birds of Tokyo and RococodeMother Motherare set to release their 3rd album on the week after CMW and this is your chance to get a sneak preview of what's in store. Here's hoping that they'll play some new tracks from their much anticipated 12-track LP, which is titled Eureka. They've kept us waiting for a good three years. That's right. O My Heart came out in 2008 on Canadian label Last Gang Records (think MetricDFA 1979The New Pornographers).

Here's a taste from that gem of a record:

This show is 19+ and only a limited number of wristbands/passes will be allowed in. So, if you're worried, buy some tickets and don't miss out.

West side: Gentleman Reg

Anyone following the Canadian indie music scene will be familiar with Gentleman Reg and it's high time you saw him live. His smooth voice, white/blond hair, and catchy choruses as well as his appearance alongside bands such as The Hidden Cameras and Broken Social Scene have made him easily recognizable in the Toronto musical community. You might have even seen his talented band mates Kelly McMichael (half of electro-pop band Rouge; one of Reg's opening band), Dana Snell (Sheezer), and David Hynes (Hidden CamerasAll Day Driver). Gentleman Reg is a perpetual "best bet" for a great live show.

Sample this track from his Arts & Crafts released album, Jet Black:

This show is 19+ and all wristbands will be accepted.

Make your choice, folks.
