Toronto, March 11th:
8:00pm - By now, you should be sitting comfortably inside Massey Hall, waiting for Serena Ryder to start her set. Did you grab a drink downstairs? Perfect. I can think of no better setting for Juno winner Serena to perform in than a venue such as Massey Hall (except, perhaps, something intimate like The Dakota Tavern) She's at the top of the list for alt-country-indie-rock darling (yeah, it's a category) and gets top marks for throwing her heart and soul into her songs. Any unrequited love or break-up playlist would be incomplete without her.
Here's Little Bit of Red from her third album, is it o.k.:
Yes, she did open for Melissa Etheridge, but there's no time to check her out. You're about to discover lesser known Canadian crooners. Quick, hop in a cab or take "the better way" and get your butt over to Bread & Circus.
9:00pm - Phew. You made it to Kensington Market. You can catch your breath later, Alanna Clarke is just going to take it away again. Continuing on with female vocalists; move over Taylor Swift, here's a Canadian that can hold her own with the best. This Albertan is still quite young, but her voice and song writing are strong, definitely beyond her years. A contender in the alt-country-not-so-much-indie-but-pop category, you will fall in love with her pop lyrics and barely noticeable country twang.
What's that? You want to hear her cover Etta James?
Well, if you insist:
Thank her for the show, shake her hand, ask for a hug, buy her Toronto recorded EP, but hurry... you need to be on Queen St West by 10pm.
Find out why in the next post! *Dun dun*
